Glossary
Plain-language meanings of the terms you will meet in PostaraMail.
- Opt-in
- A clear action by a person (ticking a box, saying yes, confirming by email) to agree to receive your emails.
- Double opt-in
- A second step: the person clicks a link in a confirmation email before they are subscribed.
- Notice
- A line such as "By registering you agree to receive emails". It tells people, but it is not a tick-box opt-in, so it is not enough in strict regions.
- Not asked yet
- People from your website who have not said yes to emails. They are listed, never emailed, and not counted in your plan.
- Declined
- People who said no. They are never emailed.
- Controller / processor
- You decide why and how your contacts' data is used (controller). PostaraMail handles it for you on your instructions (processor).
- DPA
- Data Processing Addendum: the contract that sets out how PostaraMail processes your contacts' data.
- Bounce
- An email that could not be delivered. Hard bounces are suppressed automatically.
- Complaint
- A recipient marked your email as spam. Complaints suppress that address, and three suspend sending.
- Open rate / click rate
- The share of recipients who opened your email, or clicked a link. Open rates are estimates.
- Automation
- A series of emails sent automatically, with delays, when someone joins or you add them.
- Sender
- The name and email address your emails come from. It should be on a domain you verified.
- DNS
- The address book of the internet for your domain. You add small entries (records) to it to prove the domain is yours.
- DKIM
- A digital signature record that proves an email really came from your domain.
- SPF
- A record that lists who may send email for your domain.
- DMARC
- A record that tells inboxes what to do with email that fails the checks. Gmail and Yahoo like to see it.
